Saint Patrick’s Day Party Facts

St Patrick's Day_Photogirltravels

Happy St Patrick’s Day! I just got back from the coffee shop and realized I had forgotten to wear green. I do this often on this holiday so always tell people my eyes are green so there’s no need to overdo it. One tradition that I always keep is to eat a classic St Patty’s day meal which you see above. I actually don’t cook it but go to Lunardi’s, one of our local grocery stores and pick it up. I posed this photo for the blog but will wait until tonight to actually eat it. In the mean time I was wondering about the holiday and thought I’d get some more facts for us in case you need to “wow” someone at a party. So here is what I have:

  • St. Patrick’s Day is on March 17 because that is the feast day of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. (They say he died on March 17, 461 AD)
  • The color of St. Patrick is actually blue. Green became associated with the day during the 19th century – Irish legends thought fairies and immortals wore green
  • The first St. Patrick’s day parade was Boston, not Ireland, in 1737
  • In Chicago the rivers are dyed green on St. Patrick’s Day – it makes me wonder how long they stay green, and how much dye is required to do this!
  • The phrase “drowning the shamrock” is from the custom of floating the shamrock on the top of whiskey before drinking it, which will bring a prosperous year (I will try that with a class of wine and see if it works)

So with these fun facts you’re ready to hit any party well prepared. Stay safe today and tonight and have fun!

Dreaming of My First Trip

Photogirltravels young

I’ve been so busy over the last few weeks; I’ve not been able to post a blog. A real bummer because I do have some fabulous places to show you. In the mean time I ran across a photo of me when I was probably 6 months old. I am absolutely sure I was dreaming of my first trip…Note the look of anticipation, excited to hit the road (stroller, top pulled back), pop in a book on CD (Are You My Mother?) and take the first sip of 1/2 and 1/2 infused coffee (formula). I hope everyone is doing great! My next blog will post this week!

Single?? You May Have a Valentine You Don’t Even Know About!

329893_10150616072166489_2031253443_oI wanted to be the first to wish my readers a Happy Valentine’s Day!  For those of you planning something fun today my advice is to keep it simple.  Time is the most important gift you can give someone you care about.

As for the day itself, I chuckle as I remember Valentine’s Day as a child.  First, I was NOT that super-cute girl that all the guys were googly eyed over. Oh no… I was the shy girl with the curly hair that always seemed to have a snarl that would not brush out.  (I think people just thought the back of my hair had extra body…or “lift”) Next, let’s ice this cake and add glasses and legs that were as long as kids were tall.  So when the “big day” came around it was always a bit stressful. Would anyone want me as their Valentine? Thankfully, our teachers insisted that everyone give everyone a Valentine’s card so my carefully decorated lunch bag that was taped to the chalk board was packed full of cards and those horrible chalky candy hearts (which thankfully became sweet and sour in their later life).

Flash forward many years. Today, my life is full of Valentines as I am blessed with incredible friends and the most amazing family.  To find the Valentines in your life, all you need to do is take a moment and look around. I promise… they are everywhere.

I hope everyone has a fabulous day!

PS: On a very important note, I’ve finally managed to get that big-ol snarl out of my hair – in case you were wondering why there are never any photos of me walking away from the camera.

Speed

PhotoGirlTravels_Cats Hill2I know the east coast and midwest are getting hammered with snow but here in California it’s almost spring-like. On my walk yesterday I struggled my way up “Cat’s Hill” which is located in Los Gatos, California.  On my slow assent (it’s a very steep hill)…
